How to Do the 80s AI Photo Trend: 12 ChatGPT and Gemini Prompts (2026)

12 prompts for the 80s AI photo trend: laser background studio, school yearbook, neighborhood photographer, headscarf portrait, VHS frame, couple, family and 90s. Across 168 images, the viral prompt uncovered the hair on a headscarf photo in 6 of 6 frames, and one sentence fixed it. We counted glasses, beards and date stamps too.

How to Do the 80s AI Photo Trend: 12 ChatGPT and Gemini Prompts (2026)
Key Takeaways
  • We tried the viral 80s prompt from the news 6 times on a photo of a woman wearing a headscarf (hijab). Her hair came uncovered in all 6, and in one frame the headscarf disappeared completely.
  • When we added "Keep the headscarf in place, do not show a single strand of hair" to the same prompt, hair showed in none of the 6 frames.
  • The viral prompt added a date stamp on its own to 9 of 30 frames and a paper or film border to 13. Across the 72 frames from the 12 prompts in this article, an unwanted stamp appeared once.
  • A short prompt usually swaps a modern phone for a brick phone or a Walkman instead of removing it: that happened in 11 of 12 frames. Write "ears uncovered, wrists bare, hands empty" and these items stay out of the frame.
  • If you don't mention the beard on a photo of a man, it can vanish in a studio frame: the school yearbook prompt lost it in 4 of 6 frames, and with the added sentence it stayed in 6 of 6.
  • You must be at least 18 to edit photos in Gemini. On an account without a plan, images download at 1K.

We pasted the viral 80s prompt from the news onto a photo of a woman wearing a headscarf. Her hair came uncovered in all 6 tries, a big perm pushed out over and around the headscarf, and in one frame the headscarf was gone altogether. One sentence added to the same prompt ended the problem. The 80s trend spread across Instagram and TikTok in the first week of September 2026 with the line "What would I have looked like in the 80s?", and the Turkish outlets ShiftDelete (September 7) and GZT (September 9) covered it. All you need to do is upload your photo and paste one of the 12 prompts below.

We tested the original Turkish prompts, plus that one English trend sentence, on October 30, 2026 in the Gemini API with three image models: Nano Banana 2 Lite (Flash-Lite in the app), Nano Banana 2 (Flash) and Nano Banana Pro. As input we used five fictional photos we generated with AI: a woman with wireless earbuds, a smartwatch and a phone, a man with glasses and a beard, a woman in a headscarf, a couple, and a family of four. All 168 images came through and no request was refused. News stories described the trend through ChatGPT, but we could not run ChatGPT's image model in this test. You can paste the same text into ChatGPT; our numbers apply to Gemini only.

How to Do the 80s AI Photo Trend in 5 Steps

  1. Pick a photo taken in daylight where your face is clearly visible. Your hair will change, so don't worry about it. If you have glasses or a beard, they should show in the photo.
  2. Open a new chat in Gemini or ChatGPT and upload the photo.
  3. Copy a prompt from below, fill in the square brackets for yourself and send it.
  4. Check the frame: are your hair, glasses, beard and moles in place, is there a date in the corner, is there blank paper left around the edge?
  5. Say the one thing you don't like in a second message, e.g. "remove the date in the corner, don't change anything else". Then download the image.
Most common mistake: typing only "What would I look like in the 80s?"

A short prompt carries the place where your photo was taken into the 80s: a photo from a cafe turns into a restaurant with neon signs, and a street photo turns into shop windows. Across the 18 frames from the short prompts (the English trend sentence and the Turkish wording), 17 had a sign, menu or poster in the background. If you want a studio shot, write the background yourself.

12 Ready-to-Use 80s Prompts (Copy and Paste)

Each prompt works in a single message after you upload the photo. The square brackets hold details from our test photos, so change them to fit yours. We wrote and tested all of these prompts in Turkish; the versions here are English translations. If you searched for an "80s prompt", "80s photo prompt" or "80s AI prompt text", these are the texts you're after, and they all do the same job.

1) Quick version: a one-line 80s prompt

Prompt 1 : One line, quick version
Prompt
Turn the person in this photo, with the same face[, same glasses and beard], into a film photo taken in a studio in 1985: big teased hair, jacket with shoulder pads, ears and wrists uncovered, hands empty, plain background with no text.

On the photo of the woman, the earbuds, smartwatch and phone were gone in 6 of 6 frames, and the background stayed plain with no text. We left out the bracketed part at first: on the same photo of the man, the glasses were erased in 3 of 6 frames and the beard in 3. With the brackets added, both stayed in 6 of 6. If you have no glasses or beard, delete that part. One frame picked up a "SEP '85" stamp in the corner.

2) Laser background studio: the classic 80s prompt

Prompt 2 : 80s studio with a laser background
Prompt
Turn the person in the photo I uploaded into a portrait taken in a photo studio in 1985.
Keep the facial features, skin tone, eyebrows, moles and marks as they are in the photo, and do not change the age.
Frame from the chest up.
The hair is big, layered and blow-dried; wearing a solid-color jacket with shoulder pads; ears uncovered, wrists bare, hands empty.
The background is a flat studio backdrop with crossed purple and pink laser beams and no text.
Soft flash, light film grain, saturated colors.
No text, date or logo anywhere in the image.

This is the best-known frame of the trend. The laser background came through in 6 of 6 tries, no text or date appeared, and the earbuds and watch disappeared. The mole on the cheek stayed in place in all 6 frames. If you're uploading a photo of a man, add the beard sentence from Prompt 3 as well.

3) School yearbook prompt (mottled blue background)

Prompt 3 : School yearbook photo
Prompt
Turn the person in the photo I uploaded into a 1986 school yearbook photo.
Keep the facial features, skin tone, eyebrows, moles and marks as they are in the photo, and do not change the age.
Keep the beard and mustache at the same length and the glasses with the same frame.
Head-and-shoulders, straight-on, ID-photo framing with a slight smile.
A mottled blue-gray fabric backdrop extends to all four edges of the image, flat and with no text; no paper border, no frame and no side strip.
Collared shirt and finely patterned sweater; wrists not visible.
Flat flash, slightly faded colors, fine film grain.
No name, class, year, stamp or logo in the image.

The first version had no beard sentence: the model shaved the man in 4 of 6 frames and left a blank strip beside the background in 2. We added two sentences; the beard stayed in 6 of 6 and no blank strip appeared. The glasses stayed in all 6 frames, though Pro thinned the frame in one.

4) The 80s in Turkey: neighborhood photographer prompt

Prompt 4 : Neighborhood photographer in Turkey, 1985
Prompt
Recreate the person in the photo I uploaded as if photographed in a neighborhood photographer's studio in Turkey in 1985.
Keep the facial features, skin tone, eyebrows, moles and marks as they are in the photo, and do not change the age.
Hair in the same color, in a blow-dried style that touches the shoulders; wearing a finely patterned blouse and a thin gold chain necklace; ears uncovered, hands empty.
A plain light blue curtain backdrop extends to all four edges of the image; no paper border and no frame.
Next to the person, a small wooden side table with a vase of plastic flowers on it.
Slightly yellowed colors like a paper print, fine film grain.
No signs, stamps, dates, text or logos.

You get a plain blue curtain, a side table and plastic flowers in place of an American mall studio, and no sign or stamp appeared in any of the 6 frames. Before we wrote "hair in the same color", the hair turned red in 2 frames; after that it stayed dark in 6 of 6. The paper border dropped from 5 of 6 frames to 2. Those two have a thin strip along the edge that you can crop.

5) 80s prompt for women in a headscarf (hijab)

Prompt 5 : 80s studio portrait in a headscarf
Prompt
Turn the person in the photo I uploaded into a portrait taken in a photo studio in Turkey in 1985.
Keep the headscarf in place, with the hair and neck covered and not a single strand of hair showing.
Keep the facial features, skin tone, eyebrows, moles and marks as they are in the photo, and do not change the age.
The headscarf is 80s style, floral, tied under the chin.
Wearing a long-sleeved, solid-color jacket with shoulder pads and a blouse closed at the collar. Hands empty.
The background is a plain light beige curtain with no text.
Soft flash, light film grain.
No text, date or logo.

Use this prompt if you cover your hair. The headscarf stayed in place in 6 of 6 frames, hair and neck did not show, and face similarity passed the threshold in 6 of 6 as well. If you don't want a patterned headscarf, replace "floral" with the color in your photo.

6) Miami coastal road prompt

Prompt 6 : Miami coastal road, sunset
Prompt
Turn the person in the photo I uploaded into a film photo taken on a Miami coastal road in the summer of 1984.
Keep the facial features, skin tone, eyebrows, moles and marks as they are in the photo, and do not change the age.
Keep the glasses with the same frame.
Loose-cut pastel peach jacket over a plain white T-shirt, sleeves pushed up to the elbows, wrists bare.
In the background: a sunset, palm tree silhouettes, an empty coastal road and plain pastel buildings with no text.
Warm sunset light, light film grain.
No signs, license plates, text or logos.

Glasses and beard stayed in place in all 6 frames, and no signs appeared. One Flash frame put an old car on the road with a readable license plate. To keep the scene empty, add "no cars and no one walking"; we did not test this addition separately.

7) Rock stage prompt

Prompt 7 : Rock stage, long hair
Prompt
Turn the person in the photo I uploaded into a photo taken on stage at a rock concert in 1987.
Keep the facial features, skin tone, eyebrows, moles and marks as they are in the photo, and do not change the age.
Keep the glasses with the same frame.
Long, big, hair-sprayed hair down to the shoulders; wearing a black leather jacket and a plain black T-shirt, holding an electric guitar with a plain black body and no text.
Red and purple spotlights and stage fog in the background.
Only a drum kit and a microphone on stage; no amps and no speaker cabinets, and the front of the drum is plain.
Film grain, hard contrast.
No band name, poster, text or logo.

This is the scene where brand names are hardest to get rid of. In the first version we wrote "plain amp, no text", and Marshall still appeared on the amps in at least two frames, while band prints landed on the T-shirts in 4. Once we took the amps off the stage and wrote plain black for the T-shirt, no brand or print remained in any of the 6 frames. Face similarity was lowest with this prompt (5 of 6 frames) because the person looks small and the hair covers the face.

8) VHS camcorder frame prompt (with date)

Prompt 8 : VHS home video frame, with date
Prompt
Turn the person in the photo I uploaded into a frame taken from a home video shot in 1987.
Keep the facial features, skin tone, eyebrows, moles and marks as they are in the photo, and do not change the age.
Hair blow-dried and big, wearing a colorful sweater, ears uncovered, hands empty.
Sitting at a birthday table with a solid-color tablecloth, with a simple candle-topped cake with no writing on it in front of them; behind them a flat, plain wall and balloons, no banner and no bottles.
The image looks like VHS tape: slightly bleeding colors, horizontal noise lines, soft focus, 4:3 landscape framing.
In the top right corner, white pixel text reads "PLAY"; in the bottom left corner it reads "[APRIL 12 1987]"; no other text in the image.

We gave the on-screen text in quotation marks. The test used a Turkish date, and in all 18 tries both "PLAY" and the date came out letter for letter, including the dotted capital I of the Turkish alphabet in the month name. The first version produced a "Happy Birthday" banner the model added on its own, plus a cola bottle. After we described the table and the wall, the last 6 frames had no banner or bottle, and the cake came through in 6 of 6. Change the date in the square brackets to your own.

9) 80s prom prompt for couples

Prompt 9 : 80s prom photo for couples
Prompt
Turn the two people in the photo I uploaded into a prom photo taken in 1985.
Keep the facial features, skin tone and positions of both people as they are in the photo: from the viewer's perspective, [the woman] on the left and [the man] on the right.
[Keep the man's beard.]
The woman has big hair and a shiny purple satin dress with ruffled shoulders; the man has big hair, a wide-lapel white tuxedo and a purple bow tie.
The background is a silver fringe curtain with blue and pink spotlights, no text.
Light film grain.
No text, date or logo.

The woman and the man kept their positions in all 6 frames, the beard stayed, and no text appeared. All 12 faces passed the threshold. Write the placement in the square brackets to match your photo, and keep the words "from the viewer's perspective".

10) Prompt to turn a family photo into an 80s photo

Prompt 10 : Family portrait of four, 1986
Prompt
Turn the family photo I uploaded into a family portrait taken in a studio in 1986.
Keep all [four] people where they are in the photo, do not change the left-to-right order, keep everyone's facial features, skin tone and age as they are in the photo, do not make the faces look alike, and do not add anyone.
The children stay children.
[The father has a mustache, a sweater and a shirt; the mother has blow-dried hair and a blouse with shoulder pads; the girl has braided hair and a collared dress; the boy has short curly hair and a vest.]
The background is a plain brown studio curtain with no text.
Soft flash, slightly yellowed film colors.
No text, date or logo.

All 24 faces passed the threshold, nobody was added, the children did not grow up, and the order held in all 6 frames. Rewrite the clothing line for your own family. If the faces start to look alike, describe each person one by one from left to right.

11) 90s photo prompt

Prompt 11 : 90s studio photo
Prompt
Turn the person in the photo I uploaded into a photo taken in 1996.
Keep the facial features, skin tone, eyebrows, moles and marks as they are in the photo, and do not change the age.
Straight, medium-length hair parted in the middle; wearing a loose-cut denim jacket and a plain white T-shirt; ears uncovered, wrists bare, hands empty.
The background is a plain blue gradient studio backdrop with no text.
Direct flash, light grain, faded colors.
No text, date or logo.

For the 90s we removed the big hair sentence and wrote straight hair and a denim jacket. The background, hair and clothing landed in 6 of 6 frames, and no text appeared. Because the hair changed so little, face similarity came out high too (median 0.79).

12) Arcade prompt

Prompt 12 : Arcade, purple neon
Prompt
Turn the person in the photo I uploaded into a film photo taken in an arcade in 1985.
Keep the facial features, skin tone, eyebrows, moles and marks as they are in the photo, and do not change the age.
Keep the glasses with the same frame.
Wearing a racing-stripe track jacket, wrists bare, hands empty.
In the background, arcade machines lined up side by side; their cabinets are plain, with no text or logos, and their screens are filled with abstract colored squares.
Purple neon light, light film grain.
No signs, posters, game names, text or logos.

This prompt had the highest face similarity (median 0.88) because we did not describe the hair. No names or logos appeared on the machines. The words "racing-stripe" gave two Flash frames a three-stripe sleeve; to avoid that look, write "solid-color track jacket". In one Flash frame the zipper stayed open, and adding "zipper closed" helps.

If the result isn't what you expected

We got no refusals or text-only replies in the test. If the app gives you text instead of an image, ask again with "Generate an image from this photo". If the face looks like someone else, open a new chat and upload the photo again. If a date shows up in the corner, ask it to remove the date in a second message.

Viral Prompt or Detailed Prompt? The Numbers From 168 Images

We counted three short or ready-made prompts over 48 frames and the final versions from this article over 72 frames. Face similarity showed no big gap. The gap showed up in the rest of the frame.

PromptFramesFace thresholdWhat came out
"What would I have looked like in the 80s?"1212/12The place where the photo was taken moved to the 80s, signs or menus in 11 frames
"What would I look like in the 80s?" (Turkish wording in the test)66/6Signs or posters in 6 frames, a modern phone left in 1 frame
Viral prompt from the news (person, couple, family)3052/54 facesDate stamp in 9 frames, paper or film border in 13 frames
Viral prompt + headscarf sentence66/6Hair visible in 0 frames
The 12 prompts in this article (Turkish originals)7295/96 facesDate stamp in 1 frame, no readable logo

The face counts come from OpenCV's SFace model: if the cosine similarity between input and output is above 0.363, it counts as the same person. For couples and families, each face was counted separately. This measure says "looks like the same person". It doesn't tell you whether the hair, glasses or headscarf stayed. That's why we counted clothing and hair by eye.

The viral prompt's line "as if it came out of an old family album" (our translation) reads to the model as a description of a photo print. So the model draws what surrounds a print: a white border, corner mounts, an "OCT 1985" stamp. On one family frame it wrote the Turkish "TEMMUZ '87" (July '87). One frame had a Benetton sweater, one a Smurfs T-shirt, and another a Kodak film strip. If you don't want these in an image you plan to share, include the sentence "no text, date or logo".

Where Do the Phone, Earbuds and Smartwatch Go?

Modern items test in the 80s trend: the phone and wireless earbuds in the input photo turning into a brick phone and wired headphones with a short prompt, and a studio frame with empty hands from Prompt 2
The input, two frames from a short prompt, and Prompt 2. The short prompt swaps items for their period equivalents.

The woman in our input photo had wireless earbuds in her ears, a smartwatch on her wrist and a phone in her hand. The short prompt swapped these items for their period equivalents instead of removing them: in 11 of 12 frames the phone became a brick phone, a corded handset or a Walkman, the wireless earbuds grew wires, and the watch became a digital or calculator watch. In one Pro frame the modern phone stayed in her hand.

This can be fun, but if you want a studio portrait, too many items end up in the frame. In Prompts 1, 2, 4, 8 and 11 we wrote "ears uncovered, wrists bare, hands empty", and no modern items remained across 36 frames. A classic wristwatch or bracelet came back in four frames, and those fit the 80s. Instead of writing a ban, we described the hands and wrists, and that worked.

Why Do Glasses and Beards Disappear?

Glasses and beard test in an 80s photo: frames of a man without a beard or glasses from the first prompt versions, with glasses and beard in place in the final versions
The same fictional photo of a man. Top row from the first versions, bottom row from the final versions.
Prompt (man, 6 frames)Glasses stayedBeard stayedNote
Viral prompt5/62/6The frame turned into thin metal in 3 frames
Short English prompt6/65/6All glasses frames changed to an 80s shape
Prompt 1, first version3/63/6Glasses and beard were not mentioned
Prompt 1, final version6/66/6Added "same glasses and beard"
Prompt 3, first version6/62/6Glasses were mentioned, the beard was not
Prompt 3, final version6/66/6Added "beard and mustache at the same length"

The model remembers the 80s studio portrait as a clean-shaven man. It removes a beard you didn't mention and swaps glasses for a period frame. In Prompts 6, 7 and 12 the beard stayed across 18 frames with no beard sentence, so the loss showed up most in ID-style frames. Changing the hair lowers the score too: median similarity was 0.88 in the arcade, where we did not describe the hair, and 0.54 on the long-haired rock stage.

· Google, Gemini Apps Help, Nano Banana 2 Lite (our translation from the Turkish page)

According to Google's help page, on an account without a plan, images are generated with Nano Banana 2 Lite when the model picker is on Flash-Lite and with Nano Banana 2 when it's on Flash or Pro. Nano Banana Pro opens on a paid plan through the "Redo with Pro" button. Downloads are 2K with a plan and 1K without one. Flash was good enough for an 80s frame. On Lite's couple and family frames, all 12 faces passed the threshold.

Common Mistakes in 80s Photos

  • Leaving out the headscarf. The words "big hair" in a prompt beat the headscarf, so put the headscarf in the first sentence.
  • Writing "as if it came out of a family album". The model draws an album border and a date. For a borderless frame, write that the background extends to all four edges.
  • Leaving the background blank. With no background in the prompt, the model carries the place where the photo was taken into the 80s, and signs and posters come with it.
  • Not mentioning glasses and a beard. The model changes any detail you don't write down.
  • Telling an amp to have "no text". The Marshall name still shows up, so take any object you want text-free off the stage.
  • Not stating the color before writing "blow-dried" for red or light hair. Write "hair in the same color".

Your Photo, Privacy and Sharing the Trend

Under the definition in Article 3 of Law No. 6698 (KVKK), Turkey's personal data protection law, your face is personal data, and the decision is yours. According to Gemini's privacy hub, trained human reviewers read some chats, and reviewed chats are kept for up to three years even if you delete your Gemini activity. Before you upload someone else's photo, ask that person. If there is a child in a family photo, upload it yourself, because you must be at least 18 to edit images in Gemini.

The frame you make looks like an old photo, but it was generated recently. When you post it to the family group, say it was made with AI, especially since your elders may take it for real.

Frequently Asked Questions

Upload a photo where your face is clearly visible to Gemini or ChatGPT, then paste one of the 12 prompts in this article. Prompt 2 gives you a laser background studio frame, and it came out with no text in 6 of 6 tries.

The line that started the trend was "What would I have looked like in the 80s?" It's short, so the model picks the scene on its own. For a studio frame, you can paste Prompt 2 into ChatGPT too. Our numbers come from Gemini; we did not test in ChatGPT.

Yes, it works with Flash on a Gemini account without a plan, and the image downloads at 1K. For 2K you need a Google AI plan. The daily image allowance varies by account.

Yes, use Prompt 5. The ready-made viral prompt uncovered the hair in 6 of 6 tries. With Prompt 5, and with the viral prompt plus the sentence "Keep the headscarf in place, do not show a single strand of hair", no hair showed at all.

Use Prompt 11. We wrote straight hair parted in the middle and a denim jacket in place of big hair, and 6 of 6 frames worked.

Out of 168 frames, 6 fell below the threshold: two were frames where the headscarf came off, and four were rock stage frames where the person looks small. Ask for chest-up framing. If it still doesn't look like you, open a new chat and upload the photo again.

Yes, with Prompts 9 and 10. We tested 2 and 4 people in one photo, all 36 faces passed the threshold, and the order held in 12 of 12 frames.

Once you have one 80s frame, move on to the next with the same photo. Changing the background color and the year is enough: in Prompt 2 you can turn the purple lasers green and make 1985 into 1989.
